An
Independent, Private, and Bilingual School in English and Japanese ABOUT US Koby International Academy was founded by Yoshihisa Kobayashi in 1993 to meet the needs of the children who are currently residing in the United States but are slated to return to Japan within a few years of time on an average. The most immediate and imminent issue for these children is how successfully they can master English for now, but it is equally important for them to retain their own mother tongue for the future. Eventually most of these children are destined to become bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate. With this situation in mind a variety of bilingual education programs have been developed and implemented during the past 15years. The Academy is now made up of three divisions: Day School, After-school Enrichment Program, and Saturday Supplemental Education Program. The Day School was established in 1999 and began to offer various educational programs specially designed for children who inherit the Japanese language and culture. Seemingly the subject matters taught and the curriculum employed are quite similar to those of the public school but the decisive difference lies in the use of two languages; English and Japanese. The school was registered as a private school (non-public school ) with the State Department of Education in 2000, having its own education facility at 24083 Meadowbrook. Most of the graduates have been accepted by prestigious schools not only in Japan but also in the United States. The Kinder Program is also offered as a part of the Day School program, having its own facility at 24075 Meadowbrook. The After-school Enrichment Program has the longest history of all the programs, because it traces back to the inception of the Academy in 1993. More than 100 weekly classes are regularly offered during the after-school hours. Students can select and register for whatever subjects they want to study on a monthly basis. The subject matters taught in this program vary from ordinary subjects normally taught in school to art, craft, calligraphy, or test preparation programs for TOEFL iBT, SAT or STEP. Most of the participants go to American school during the day and attend some of these classes in the evening. The vigorous enrichment program has been warmly accepted and supported by the local community and the enrollment has always been on the rise. The Saturday Supplementary Education Program is also an integral part of the Academy. They meet only once a week on Saturday but almost all the subject matters normally taught in school in Japan are offered in this program.. Due to the vigorous curriculum, and overwhelming demand for this kind of program, all the classes are always full of students. They normally attend public schools during the weekdays and take part in the program on Saturdays. The Administration Office is located at 24055 Meadowbrook Road, Novi, Michigan 48375.
